Erika Wasserman debuted as a director in 2022 with the comedy drama The Year I Started Masturbating. The film was met with fantastic reviews in Sweden and Denmark, described as “The sweetest Swedish romantic comedy in years” by Aftonbladet, and a ”Liberatingly unpredictable directorial debut” by DN. The film also received a prestigious Guldbagge Award nomination for ‘Best Actress’ for Katia Winter’s performance. The Year I Started Masturbating was sold to Netflix worldwide and saw its Netflix premiere in 2023.
Erika Wasserman has an extensive background as a producer and has in the last ten years produced some of Sweden’s most interesting films including Border (2018), Avalon (2011), The Quiet Roar (2014), Man tänker sitt (2009) and Bluebird (2013). With a sensitive eye and instinct for poignant stories and artistic height, she has been involved in shaping some of the most prominent directors we have in Sweden today. In 2013, she was named Producer on the Move in Cannes and has also served as commissioner at The Swedish Film Institute. Wasserman founded the production company Gimme a Break in 2014 where she produces films and TV series.
Currently, Wasserman is working on her next feature film and a comedy TV series.
