Anxious People by Fredrik Backman is an Editors’ Pick for Amazon’s Best of September feature. The title will be displayed on a 65’ x 83’ corner billboard in NYC, outside Penn Station. The billboard is part of a new initiative highlighting select Editors’ Picks and Amazon chart titles during September. Anxious People will be the only title featured as a single face out.
The following review was published together with the announcement that Anxious People is a pick for the “Best of” list:
“Backman is a funny, charming story teller, and Anxious People is a fine showcase for his talents as a writer. There are twists and surprises. /…/ Beneath it all, there is a deep sense of warmth and empathy. Backman is particularly gifted at creating a community of memorable characters and opening up their mental states to readers. And many readers of Anxious People will in turn reflect on their own anxieties. Ultimately, Backman seems to be telling us that — though it be a messy, ambiguous world we inhabit — we can turn toward one another to find calm and assurance. This is a novel that can, and should, be embraced by anxious people everywhere.”

It’s reminiscent of an Agatha Christie tale, where the group is slowly whittled down. Although the cover labels it a thriller, there’s a strong detective element too: Who’s targeting them? Why? And how is someone managing to manipulate their environment? The answers are revealed gradually—the most crucial ones saved for last, and they’re far from easy to predict.
